Songs for Lord Tortoise

BY Christopher WatersPublished Dec 1, 1999

Songs for Lord Tortoise, a reference to NME’s mistaken naming of an old Cramps record, Songs the Lord Taught Us, is a solid 19-song collection of simple, yet effective indie rock from a new band that features one of the principal members of the late great Aussie band, Blairmailer. Huon’s debut disc features a couple of Dirty Three-style atmospheric drone ditties, but spends the majority of its time measuring out stark pop numbers in coffee spoons. Luna might be a better comparison, but even that fails to capture the range of styles collected in this whole. Tracks "Domestic" and "Words, Parasites" should be college radio staples. Does Hal Hartley know about this band yet? He’s got his next soundtrack artist right here.
