Hollowphonic

Phonic 50mg

BY Christopher WatersPublished Dec 1, 1999

Ladies and gentlemen, we are floating in space, again. The debut album by Toronto quintet Hollowphonic is a blissed-out orchestration of tranquil soundscapes and ambient waves of drone that usually gather a head full of steam, resulting in raging rock’n’roll epiphanies, such as "Confusion" and "Sad To Feel." Inspired by the usual space rock suspects, Spiritualized, Spacemen 3 and My Bloody Valentine, Hollowphonic flows from tranquil noodling to blistering intensity. Granted, there’s nothing new to that formula, but with Phonic 50mg, Hollowphonic has found an effective new package that makes it seem fresh and innovative.
