Halifax's Hell City Love merges Johnny Thunders' drugged sophistication with traces of AmRep Records' ferocity, constructing some fine tunes on their debut EP. Disc opener "Hero for the Damned" commences with slow and ominous drones before breaking out of the gates and churning swiftly with melodic viciousness. "After Midnight Cowboy" is a well-crafted piece of downhearted notched pop, while "Kicking and Screaming" delves into more upbeat rock'n'roll terrain. "Forced Entry" lurches with torrential distortion, persistently on the verge of sliding off the road with heavily inebriated attitude and "The Hunter" delivers baleful distortion, augmented by Lisa McGlone's soaring guest vocals. Throughout their debut, Hell City Love offers skilled heavy rock.
