Geordie Haley

Sculptures

BY Bryon HayesPublished Nov 3, 2009

Halifax, NS resident Geordie Haley couldn't have picked a better title for this collection of improvisations for prepared guitar. Sculptures stands out as a unique and fascinating guitar record, and is certainly the audio equivalent of a series of found object art constructions. Haley utilizes a number of techniques to achieve a broad spectrum of tones: various bridges and capos, odd string gauges, an ebow and a variety of objects used as slides or picks. Surprises lurk around every corner, as Haley bends, scrapes and yanks on the strings of his guitar. Recorded, mixed and mastered by Toronto's Jean Martin, who also plays prepared banjo on "Top Water Lure," Sculptures is loaded with energy and is an interesting listen.
