General Surgery

A Collection of Depravation

BY Denise FalzonPublished Mar 25, 2012

Swedish gore-grinders General Surgery recently re-signed to Relapse and their first order of business is offering up a compilation featuring a whopping 30 tracks. A Collection of Depravation features almost 20 years worth of material from the rare side of their catalogue, including cuts from out-of-print singles, vinyl-only EPs, compilation appearances and unheard demos, as well as some covers. The result is an early Carcass-esque, raw and unrelenting, gore-filled assault. Blood-soaked opener "Pre-Bisectal Corrosive Immersion" is an instant highlight, as are "The League of Extraordinary Grave Robbers" and "Viva! Blunt Force Trauma," from General Surgery's debut full-length, Left Hand Pathology. The collection was digitally remastered by Pig Destroyer's Scott Hull, which makes it that much more of a gristly listen. The band finish A Collection of Depravation with, of course, a Carcass cover, in the form of a glorious rendition of "Empathological Necroticism."
