Fucked Up vs. Sonic Youth, Daft Punk's Tron Leak, and the Collaborative Plans of Julie Dorion and Chad VanGaalen Lead This Week's News Round-Up
Published Jan 23, 2010Following another week of tireless news gathering, we're back with our weekend instalment of News Round-Up.
First up, Fucked Up caused quite the stir this week with the band's Jonah Falco and Ben Cook recording what seems to be a Sonic Youth diss track called "Cranking to Sonic Youth." If you're unfamiliar with cranking, it's British slang for when somebody is crying and wanking at the same time. Cook has since shed more light on the matter, saying the song "is not about the band at all, it's more of an homage to their fans." And while we're still trying to figure out how cranking can be connected to any sort of tribute, Cook says there is no real feud between Fucked Up and Sonic Youth, just a faux one.
Moving along, this week we also had Daft Punk's Tron soundtrack seemingly springing a leak, Julie Doiron revealing her plans to make a collaborative album with Chad VanGaalen and Flaming Lips' Wayne Coyne getting caught on Google Maps Street View.
In sadder news, Canadian folk icon Kate McGarrigle passed away, as did Whale Music author Paul Quarrington and rocksteady pioneer Lynn Taitt.
Finally, Coachella got its 2010 line-up, which features Pavement, Jay-Z and Faith No More, as well as "Thom Yorke ????" However, there's a reason for all those question marks.
