The Flaming Lips' Christmas On Mars Out October 28

The Flaming Lips' Christmas On Mars Out October 28
After years of "it’s coming, it’s coming,” the Flaming Lips’ Chinese Democracy, Christmas on Mars, is finally getting a much-deserved DVD treatment. The long-in-the-works Lips film will hit DVD on October 28 and to sweeten the deal it’s coming packaged with a CD version of the original score.

On the DVD, Billboard tells us you can expect interviews with head Martian/Lip Wayne Coyne and his cast and crew, behind-the-scenes footage, outtakes and, um, Russian subtitles.

To refresh your memories, the Flaming Lips began filming Christmas on Mars way back in 2001. It stars Coyne, along with band-mates Steven Drozd and Michael Ivins, and was shot around the band’s native Oklahoma City. And like the title suggests, the plot revolves around, well, the first Christmas on Mars.

To elaborate, here’s how the band describe the film: "The long-awaited feature film by the Flaming Lips is set in outer space on the surface of Mars. The double failures of a clunky old oxygen generator and an exotic but finicky gravity control pod have conspired to weaken the resolve and psychological judgment of the crew and the film's protagonist Major Syrtis. This means he has horrific hallucinations that are centered around the artificial birth of the Christmas baby. An alien super-being arrives and with his otherworldly powers fixes the oxygen generator but it's the station's genius mechanic who fixes the gravity problem."

Well now that you kind of have a handle on the plot, to confuse you a bit more, here’s what Coyne had to say about the score to Billboard: "Elements of it sound very much like Bernard Herrmann in a room with Igor Stravinsky, and they hashed out, 'you take this scene, I'll take this scene.'"

Okay, now for something simple; here is the tracklisting for the score to Christmas on Mars:

1. "Once Beyond Hopelessness"
2. "The Distance Between Mars And The Earth — Part One"
3. "The Horrors Of Isolation: The Celestial Dissolve, Triumphant Hallucination, Light 4. Being Absorbed"

5. "Your Spaceship Comes From Within"
6. "Suicide And Extraordinary Mistakes"

9. "The Gleaming Armament Of Marching Genitalia"
