Rapper/producer El-P has been riding high in 2012 on the acclaim over his recent solo LP Cancer 4 Cure (not to mention his beatwork on Killer Mike's equally heralded R.A.P. Music), and will shed some more light on the praised project next week when he delivers an instrumental edition of the album.
The lyric-less edition of Cancer 4 Cure drops Tuesday (October 23) via Fat Possum. While the original LP features strong verses from El-P, as well as guests including Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire, Killer Mike and Danny Brown, the newly tweaked edition will home in on the effort's forward-thinking synth arrangements and the "bruising low-end and sonic references to Bomb Squad-era B-sides." Supposedly, the "intricate details are made even more evident when absorbed without verses."
As the press release notes, having the instrumentals out in the open will likely have some of these backdrops pop up elsewhere on the mixtape circuit. Only time will tell who tackles them first.
In the meantime, why not check out El-P's new video for "Stay Down," a tongue-in-cheek clip, which has a whole concert-crowd giving him the dude the thumbs-down on his mic skills. If we experienced that, maybe we'd issue an instrumentals album, too.
