Drain The Sky

Haunted by Rivers

Most bands don’t want to dwell on what groups their members previously spent time in. And I know it was years ago but His Hero Is Gone were one of the best underground bands of our time, so it needs to be mentioned that Drain the Sky bassist/vocalist Carl Auge was in the mighty HHIG. So it was with much anticipation I put on this CD. And while they do what they do well, it is best to forget everything I just said and not go in expecting any crushing crust hardcore grind, as Drain the Sky focus more on long, atmospheric songs that recall, yup, Neurosis ("Learning to Swim” sounds obscenely like the masters). It has a heavier edge than shoegaze metal though: "Concrete Memories” starts off as raging, sloppy, raw crust. Those whispered vocals sound silly when they’re trying to be dramatic but still, this will appeal to those who like atmospheric metal. As for me, well, my attention span is only getting shorter these days, so back to Monuments to Thieves I go.
