Donnacha Costello

Before We Say Goodbye

BY Bryan WellsPublished Mar 16, 2010

After a few years of sub par releases from Steve Bug's powerhouse label, Poker Flat has nicely turned back the hands of time with Donnacha Costello's latest album, Before We Say Goodbye. Rooted deeply in the sounds of Chicago house and Detroit techno, Before We Say Goodbye brings nostalgic ideas up to speed with the modern state of dance music. Costello's ability to lace soulful melodic progressions into classically understated drum rhythms is the key to this album. While the current trend amongst DJs and producers around the globe is to seek the safe haven and prosperity that lay in Berlin, Costello doesn't hide his decision to do the exact opposite. Tracks like "Leaving Berlin" and "The Last Train Home" paint a clear picture of Costello's eased state of mind regarding his exodus from Berlin. Before We Say Goodbye is a highly recommended album that will make you a believer in Poker Flat once again.
