DJ Rashad Details New Hyperdub Full-Length: 'Double Cup'

BY Alex HudsonPublished Aug 15, 2013

Now that you've had a chance to read up on the meaning of "footwork" in the new issue of Exclaim!, here's an example of the genre in action. Chicago footwork pioneer DJ Rashad is continuing his busy 2013 with the release of a new album, Double Cup, which is out on October 22 through Hyperdub.

This follows the recent EPs Rollin' and I Don't Give a Fuck; the title track from the latter collection re-emerges here. His most recent full-length was 2012's TEKLIFE Vol. 1 - Welcome to the Chi.

Double Cup finds Rashad teaming up with a number of producers. It's said to bring "hip-hop, R&B, acid, house, techno, and jungle into its footwork turbine, spitting them out in recombinant fragments glued together with purring 808 sub triplets and jerky polyrhythms."

Hyperdub boss Kode9 recently told Exclaim! that Rashad was his favourite producer of the moment. "[DJ Rashad] is voracious with his sampling," he said. "His songs have that element of recognition where you think, 'I remember that track,' but it's put into this new context. It's fast and very bass-heavy with constantly changing rhythms. It's an amazing feeling to be releasing an album on your own label by someone that you respect so much."
