DJ Egadz

Monotony

BY Andy LeePublished Mar 1, 2003

San Diego’s DJ Egadz follows in fellow Californian DJ Shadow’s footsteps, concocting sombre soundscapes strewn with intense rhythmic breakdowns. Unlike Shadow, Egadz relies on his keyboard and guitar instead of stacks of wax as the foundation for his cinematic beats. Still, the beats are funky, the mood is gloomy, and the arrangements are intricately layered. Egadz is at his finest during more original moments like the quiet, smouldering vibe of "She Fluttered Her Wings” and the jagged rise and fall of "Nirvana.” Like all post-Endtroducing producers, Egadz stands in the shadow of Shadow, but does a fair job of shining the light on something exciting, if not entirely new.
