Dark Horses

'Black Music' (album stream)

BY Alex HudsonPublished Mar 28, 2013

Gloomy UK act Dark Horses released Black Music back at home last year, but it will come to North America through Last Gang Records on April 2. Before that U.S. and Canada release date, the album is available to stream from Exclaim.ca.

The disc was helmed by Richard Fearless of Death in Vegas at Key Club Recording Company near Chicago, IL. Sonic touchstones include Talking Heads, Kraftwerk, Spacemen 3 and Radiohead as the group tap into country, soul, pop, psych, and hip-hop.

These diverse influences are tied together by a dark, heady sound that translates in the dramatically psychedelic opener "Rose," the aggressively beat-driven "Alone," and the hushed Swedish-language ballad "Sanningen Om Dig."

Dark Horses are also releasing a limited-edition cassette version of the album. If fans go to Soundscapes in Toronto and purchase the album, they'll get the limited-edition, hand-numbered and fingerprinted cassette, featuring an exclusive new remix by Rules.
