Bostons Closer Than Kin are one band that manages to defy genres. The opening track to The Machineries of Breath is "The Euphoria of Strangulation, a fast track fuelled by hardcore breakdowns and throaty sing-screams. While "Toys are Traded for Tears is a more melodic, punk piece with not-so-uplifting lyrics. Theres a major surprise half way through the record, with the dreamy, acoustic "The Uncertainty of Sanity. This album has got a little something for everybody, with interesting combinations of metal, thrash hardcore and dare I say it, emo. The Machineries of Breath is clear proof that Closer Than Kin are one of the tightest heavy bands out of Boston, no matter what the genre.
