Centro-matic

Triggers and Trash Heaps EP

BY Sofi PapamarkoPublished Apr 1, 2006

Veterans of the Americana scene, Centro-matic turn ten in March. Triggers and Trash Heaps is the first single from their forthcoming Fort Recovery. The single is a solid return to form for this Texas-based group, Triggers is a solid, guitar-driven rock song defined by Will Johnson’s distinct weighted, raspy vocals. The other three tracks, which include a stripped reprise of the title track, are dirtier and well realised. "Take a Rake,” a lo-fi meandering rock song that sounds uncharacteristically rich for a four-track recording, ends with what sounds like a spontaneous jam. Fans of Will Johnson’s solo recordings, or his other project South San Gabriel, should enjoy this single along with those who own all nine of Centro-matic’s previous releases. Regardless of Johnson’s interesting voice and the strong, catchy, song construction, however, the single is unlikely to bring many new listeners, especially those who own Wilco’s entire back catalogue.
