Catheter

Southwest Doom Violence

BY Greg PrattPublished Apr 30, 2012

I do love it when bands sum up their sound in their album title, and here, Denver, CO crusty grind/sludge guys Catheter do just that on their third album. And doom violence (as in power violence) is apt, as on this, their first full-length since 2005, the band lay down a very raw assault that goes from raging, Relapse-style grindcore to crusty sludge to sloppy, squat-level doom. Sometimes, as in "Prosthetic Mind" and "Conspiracy Control," a bit of a groove is even attained, before the tunes devolve into double-bass-led, quick-time death metal stomp, then Slap-a-Ham-worshipping power violence and then grind, always the grind. With this album, the band firmly place themselves in with the Phobias, Goatsbloods and Agents of Satans of the world, which is great company to keep. All this and a smart 28-minute run-time? And a song called "Doom to Grind"? Uh, yes please.
