Beach House Ripped Off in Volkswagen Ad

Ad firms, god bless 'em, can't always afford to a license a song from a band du jour, and sometimes resort to writing knock-off tunes that convey a similar feeling without having to pay the group whose sound is being cribbed. We've seen it happen before to Arcade Fire, and Sigur Rós, and now it looks as if it's just happened to Baltimore's Beach House.

As Diffuser.fm reports [via Pitchfork], a new commercial for the Volkswagen Polo, featuring a sentimental father/daughter story, includes a song that sounds suspiciously like the dream pop duo's "Take Care," off 2010's Teen Dream. Just so you know, it isn't.

The track that scores the advertisement is called "Whispers and Stories," and it was written and recorded by Sniffy Dog, a team of professionals that specialize in crafting musical cuts for commercials.

Beach House haven't weighed in on the sound-alike, but you can make your own call by checking out the advert and the original tune down below.

UPDATE: Via their Facebook, Beach House have now issued a statement about the offending ad. They write: "Hate to have to address this VW ad story during our release week, but an important part of information wasn't included in the news story. The ad agency actively tried to license 'Take Care' from us for weeks, to which we politely declined. People's comments/ anger should not be directed towards VW or us. It was the ad agency that made these moves. I hope this also clarifies to fans and non-fans just how 'Take Care' and the VW ad song are related. We will release a proper statement weeks from now when we don't have more interesting things to do/ talk about."
