Sounding a bit like a cross between CCR's John Fogarty and Flaming Lips front-man Wayne Coyne, Baptist Generals vocalist Chris Flemmons is the glue that refuses to dry yet holds the jangly, abrasive, melodic and chaotic sounds of the Baptist Generals together. This second Sub Pop release for the band (there were at least two previous independent releases prior to 2001) again finds them foregoing the proper studio in favour of an eight-track recorder and what sounds like some cruddy garage somewhere. Unfortunately, not all of these songs are good enough to withstand the weight of lousy production, although an abundance of passion and inspiration helps carry things along. Another disc bound to be embraced by contrarians and Roky Erikson fans the world over.
