Late last year, Darryl Jenifer and the rest of Bad Brains issued Into the Future, but the hardcore legend is moving into a new direction in 2013 via his new concept outfit the White Mandingos. The project also includes rapper Murs and Ego Trip magazine co-founder Sacha Jenkins, and their debut LP The Ghetto Is Tryna Kill Me arrives June 11 through Fat Beats.
A press release notes that the trio's first full-length is a conceptual piece that revolves around the fictional character of Tyrone White, a rock singer from Harlem's Polo Grounds housing project struggling with themes of race and identity.
"I think a lot of folks will be able to relate to Tyrone and his struggles," Jenkins said in a statement. "He feels misunderstood — by his women, his friends, his people. And that misunderstanding sometimes affects who he is and who he truly wants to be. Should he not be playing this music because he's black? And who the hell is in the position to tell him what to do anyways?"
Musically, the set is said to further blur boundaries by flirting with hip-hop, hardcore punk, metal and R&B. You can sample the swagged-out, dub- and '80s hardcore-inspired title track down below.
