Let's be honest with ourselves — we always knew that the supposed return of Australian sound collage artists the Avalanches was probably too good to be true. Since hinting at a follow-up to their 2001 classic Since I Left You, they've yet to offer any tangible information. They did, however, contribute to a King Kong musical.
King Kong is set to premiere this summer in Melbourne, Australia. In addition to music from Justice and Massive Attack, among others, the soundtrack will include a cover by the Avalanches of the Harold Arlen/Ted Koehler song "Get Happy," which was popularized by Judy Garland.
If you scroll to the 1:58 mark of the promotional video below, you can hear about 20 seconds of the new piece. It's not much, but it's starting to feel like the most new material from the Avalanches that we're gonna get for the time being.
Thanks to Pitchfork for the tip.
