Acid Evolution: 1988-2003

BY Stephanie KalePublished Nov 1, 2005

Acid Evolution is yet another brilliant addition to the curriculum vitae of prolific music innovator Uwe Schmidt (Atom Heart, Señor Coconut and Flanger). Schmidt has compiled this remarkable concept album that enlists his own production under 16 different pseudonyms crafted specifically for this project. Each track represents a year from 1988 to 2003, displaying both an aesthetic and a technological sonic history of Schmidt’s acid house production. More varied in style than Soul Jazz recent Can You Jack? compilations, some tracks are a smooth ride in the psychedelic subterranean world of bass, while others twist, squelch and gurgle, capturing the signature cold mechanical feel of acid house. Aside from being a thoroughly pleasurable listen, this album presents how each "artist” manipulates the versatility of the TB-303.
