The Arch Cupcake

Box of Bees

BY Ashley HampsonPublished May 13, 2009

Why the Arch Cupcake hasn't blown sky-high by this point is a mystery. Based in NYC, this is a guy who began DJing at the age of ten, had production deals in place from major record labels at 16 and just out of high school, was doing production work for major label artists. Co-founder and one half of NYC duo Ming+FS, Box of Bees is the Arch Cupcake's first full-length release as a solo artist. This album is incredibly inventive, to say the least. The amount of skill the Arch Cupcake has is beyond evident — the turntablism, beat boxing, mixing and instrumentation are mind blowing, and done completely by him as well — and the outrageous spectrum of sounds, and elements, the album covers is proof of that. Box of Bees blurs the lines between everything — hip-hop and electronic mingle alongside insane scratching, glitchy beats, grungy bass and crunchy synths. It runs from the subdued to the in-your-face and back again without ever holding back a single beat, note, thought or idea. This is one of those albums you wait for to come along then recommend to all your friends.
