ANOHNI Details 'HOPELESSNESS,' Premieres New Video with Naomi Campbell

BY Gregory AdamsPublished Mar 9, 2016

It's been more than a year now since ANOHNI first started talking about her electronic-geared album, HOPELESSNESS. Following last fall's unveiling of the "4 Degrees" single, the Antony and the Johnsons singer has properly announced the new album, as well as shared a new video. HOPELESSNESS officially hits stores May 6 through Secretly Canadian/Rough Trade.

A press release explains that the 11-song effort from ANOHNI is a dance record combining electronic music textures with soulful vocals and political lyrics. Themes explored on the album are said to include "surveillance, drone warfare and ecocide." As previously reported, the record was co-produced between ANOHNI, Hudson Mohawke and Oneohtrix Point Never.

The album details were dropped at the same time as the record's second single, "Drone Bomb Me." The video for the snare-clapping dance cut was directed by Nabil and stars model Naomi Campbell.

ANOHNI explained of the song in a statement: "'Drone Bomb Me' is a love song written from the perspective of a young girl in Afghanistan whose family has been executed by unmanned U.S. drones. She dreams of being annihilated."

You'll find the video below, as well as the tracklisting info for HOPELESSNESS and info on a few overseas performances.

Prior to being known as ANOHNI, the musician had gone by the name Antony Hegarty. She'd led Antony and the Johnsons, whose last full-length release was 2010's Swanlights.
