Cinema really hasn't reached new heights since the Twilight films were made. This is just the objective truth of the matter.
While there's no sense in messing with perfection, it's been newly revealed that Taylor Swift almost appeared alongside Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, former flame Taylor Lautner and the gang in Twilight: New Moon.
The film's director, Chris Weitz, appeared on the latest episode of Twilight actor Ashley Greene's podcast The Twilight Effect to discuss the saga's second instalment, and shared that Swift had actually requested to be in the movie — but he had turned her down.
"Taylor Swift and I had the same agent at the time," Weitz explained, "and he said, 'Taylor would like to be in this movie — not because of you, but she's a Twi-hard.'" Apparently, the pop star's agent said she was open to any sort of role, having told the filmmaker: "'She will be someone at the cafeteria, or the diner or whatever, but she just wants to be in this movie.'"
However, it was for the sake of his work's artistic integrity that he had to turn down a superstar cameo appearance. "The hardest thing for me was to be like, 'The moment that Taylor Swift walks onto the screen for about five minutes, nobody is going to be able to process anything,'" Weitz went on. She has been known to have that effect.
Of course, the director has since questioned his decision — and rightfully so, because Swift could easily have donned a cape as a member of the exceptionally gorgeous vampire-ruling Volturi, or even passed for another of the pale high schoolers in the sleepy town of Forks. She could have been Bella's new lab partner after Edward left school! Any fanfic writer worth their salt will tell you: the possibilities really are endless.
"I kick myself for it too, because – I was like, 'Wow, I could have been, like, hanging out with Taylor Swift, and maybe we could've been friends or something,'" Weitz reflected wistfully, adding: "She must've just been like, 'Who is this jerk who would say no?' But sometimes, you make decisions and you go, 'This is for the best of the film.'"
Much like Bella, she just doesn't belong to Edward's world; Swift is (or was, at least) decidedly more Team Jacob, having dated Lautner around the same time as New Moon's theatrical release in late 2009.
Perhaps it's not too late to right these wrongs, though. David Cronenberg is eager to reunite Stewart and Pattinson, and Swift continues to dabble in acting, including in a forthcoming David O. Russell film. Even a mere 2013 meme of the pop star's song managed to elevate Thor: Love and Thunder!
