R.I.P. Angela Lansbury

Three-time Oscar-nominated actor Dame Angela Lansbury passed away in her sleep in the early morning today, just a few days before her 97th birthday.

"The children of Dame Angela Lansbury are sad to announce that their mother died peacefully in her sleep at home in Los Angeles," reads a statement from her family [via BBC].

The actor was born October 16, 1925, in England, and moved to New York to study at the Feagin School of Dramatic Art. Her acting career began in 1944 with her role in Gaslight. She would go on to star in dozens of films over the span of eight decades, including making an appearance in the forthcoming Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.

Other film credits include voice acting in Beauty and the Beast, introductory hosting in Fantasia 2000, 1965's The Greatest Story Ever Told, 1948's The Three Musketeers and many, many more. Lansbury also worked on several theatre and television projects, including Broadway musical Mame and American whodunit series Murder, She Wrote, in which she starred as Jessica Fletcher.

She is survived by her three children and her brother, producer Edgar Lansbury, in addition to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
