Amazon's Prime Video will soon include ad breaks.
In an email to subscribers sent this week (January 2), the company confirmed that both TV shows and movies will include "limited advertisements" starting February 5. According to the message, this is to "allow us to continue investing in compelling content and keep increasing that investment over a long period of time." This confirms recent reports that Prime Video will soon include ads.
The company has also announced a new membership tier, where users can watch Prime without ads for an extra $2.99 CAD per month.
In other words, Prime Video has essentially demoted all members to an ad-supported tier while maintaining the same price, and created a more expensive tier that offers the same service as before.
Netflix also recently added an ad-supported tier, although this was introduced at a cheaper price, rather than for the same price that members already paid.
