FKA twigs' allegations against ex-partner Shia LaBeouf — a relationship which she described as "relentlessly abusive," claiming sexual battery, assault and infliction of emotional distress — will see a jury trial.
The British artist born Tahliah Barnett sued the actor in December 2020. A hearing today (May 2) in Los Angeles court set a trial date: the legal proceedings will call the plaintiff and defendant to the courtroom on April 17, 2023, Rolling Stone reports.
"What I went through with Shia was the worst thing I've ever been through in the whole of my life," Barnett shared in the filing report for The New York Times. "I don't think people would ever think that it would happen to me. But I think that's the thing. It can happen to anybody."
She went on to detail LaBeouf's abuse "tactics," which included accusing her of plotting to leave him in the middle of the night, as well as pressuring her to sleep naked for "constant availability."
The actor responded to the lawsuit, initially telling NYT via email: "I have no excuses for my alcoholism or aggression, only rationalizations. I have been abusive to myself and everyone around me for years. I have a history of hurting the people closest to me. I'm ashamed of that history and am sorry to those I hurt. There is nothing else I can really say."
Since then, LaBeouf has denied "each and every" allegation, claiming "self-defence," with his legal team arguing that Barnett has "not suffered any injury or damage" as a result of his actions.
