Tom DeLonge Says New blink-182 Is "Probably the Best Album We've Ever Made"

"I still think we're writing our best songs"

After reportedly finishing their new album before embarking on their massive reunion tour back in May, blink-182 have continued to take an "EDGING"-inspired approach to rolling it out.

The follow-up to 2019's NINE — and the original trio's first album since 2011's Neighborhoods — has yet to actually be announced, but guitarist Tom DeLonge continues to tease that the "progressive and elevated" LP is "probably the best album" they've "ever made."

In a new interview with Fender in honour of his new limited-edition Stratocaster guitar collection, the dick-joke connoisseur covered a range of topics, including his appreciation for simplicity in instruments and artful accessibility in songwriting. While he was on the latter topic, logic obviously took him to what he and bandmates Travis Barker and Mark Hoppus have been cooking up in the studio together.

"I still think we're writing our best songs," DeLonge said of the veterans' current era. "I think our album coming out is probably our best album we've ever made." He further reflected on the tour and the makeup of blink's current live shows, which the guitarist believes have reached their peak at long last.

"The production that we brought on this tour is finally the first perfect, cohesive branding and symbol of everything that the band is about," he continued. "It's got the nostalgia in there and the history in there, but it's also got the fun and reverence and childhood charm. And it's got the rebellion, but it's got the technology too."

DeLonge added, "So it's this really cool rebirth of everything — or the best of everything that we've done, but done the way people always wished we would have done it! [They're] like, 'Right, you guys aren't half bad now!' You know? 'Thank you!'"

With the band at what he perceives as the top of their game, the guitarist has every reason to feel vindicated — especially now that Hoppus has acknowledged that he was right about aliens.

We'll just have to wait and see if the album in question truly does encompass the crème de la crème of their catalogue. In the meantime, check out our ranking of blink-182's best songs (for far) and watch the full interview with DeLonge below.
