The Canadian punk and hardcore scene has been hit with a blow today with the loss of veteran drummer Vassil Mester. While his cause of death is unknown as of press time, the performer passed away last night (April 1).

The news was confirmed by Ottawa band ZEX, with whom Mester had served as drummer for the last little while. Sharing the above photo, they offered the following statement:

Our drummer for the past two months and best friend Vassil, passed away last night. He was a great loveable character. Truly outgoing, caring and friendly. This is devastating. Rest in Peace, Kamikaze Rocker.

Mester was a true veteran, having performed with a diverse spread of bands, including Marvelous Darlings, Cheap Thrills, Absolut and Rad Habits.

He also served as an original member of the Toronto glam rock act Diemonds, who shared their own memories of the performer on Facebook this morning.

"Vassil was an awesome dude, an honest lyricist, and accompanied us on our first ever Diemonds tour in 200," they wrote. "Above all he was a true character and rock n' roll has lost another unsung hero."
