Paramore's Hayley Williams and former band member Josh Farro finally got writing credits on Olivia Rodrigo's pop hit "good 4 u" officially last week, after many listeners noticed how eerily similar Rodrigo's song sounded to Paramore's RIOT! single "Misery Business." Now, reports that Paramore and Rodrigo were in communication with each other prior to the song's release in May have surfaced.
According to Variety, parties for Rodrigo and Paramore were in talks before "good 4 u" was released, and the writing credit is "actually [for] an interpolation — which is essentially an element of a previously recorded song re-recorded and incorporated into a new song."
Last month, Williams and Farro were added to the credits of Rodrigo's pop-punk track as co-writers alongside Rodrigo and producer, Dan Nigro. "good 4 u" was the third single off of Rodrigo's debut album, SOUR.
Williams confirmed the news with her Instagram followers on August 24, by re-sharing a story from publisher Warner Chappell Music that celebrated a music chart feat for "good 4 u" and gave a shoutout to Williams and Farro.
Since its release, there was speculation that Rodrigo should extend some of her "good 4 u" writing credits after listeners noticed the similarities between the tracks. We're glad Rodrigo followed through, as the Paramore writers now make up half of the credited "good 4 u" writing team, as listed on the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) website.
While there are no extensive details about any agreement that might've been made, both Rodrigo and Paramore have crafted equally iconic tracks that are filled with their respective amounts of angst.
