Madonna Says Directing Her Own Biopic Was a "Preemptive Strike" Against "Misogynistic Men"

Last month, it was revealed that 'Ozark' actor Julia Garner was offered the role of Madonna

There's a new Madonna biopic coming our way sometime in the semi-near future, and it's being directed and co-written by Madonna herself. That's not necessarily the most common practice when it comes to telling one's own life story on the big screen, but Madonna's never been one to follow the status quo.

And in a new interview with Variety, the pop legend shared some updates on the writing process — which is happening alongside Diablo Cody — and called the decision to self-direct a "pre-emptive strike" on misogynists' narratives about her career.

"I have a very long script that is really hard for me to make shorter," Madonna told the magazine. "I've been whittling away at it, but it's like hacking off my limbs."

"It was also a pre-emptive strike because a lot of people were trying to make movies about me. Mostly misogynistic men," she continued. "So I put my foot in the door and said, 'No one's going to tell my story, but me.'"

In June, it was revealed that the role of Madonna had been offered to Ozark's Julia Garner, though it's not known whether she accepted the part.

This won't be Madonna's first behind the camera — she previously directed the 2008 British dramedy Filth and Wisdom and the 2011 historical romance W.E., both of which she also co-wrote.
