Keanu Reeves Got a Bass Lesson from Flea

"Just feel it, man. Just play," sounds like the worst advice ever

Keanu Reeves just added some lore to his side mission as bass player for L.A.-based grunge trio Dogstar, revealing to Fender that Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers gave him a lesson once.

"I remember one time I was doing a film, and Flea was in it, or I was in a film with Flea, and I remember there was a house, and there was amps and instruments and stuff like that," Reeves revealed.

"And I was like, 'Hey, Flea, can you give me a lesson?' And he was like, 'Sure, man!' And he was like [gestures complex bass solo]. And I was like, 'Alright, so?' And he was like, 'Just feel it, man. Just play.' And I was like, 'Yeah.'"

From a non-bass playing perspective, that sounds thoroughly unhelpful. But, when you're as comfortable with an instrument as Flea is with the bass, the "just feel it, man" explanation probably feels perfectly adequate.

The movie that hosted this quasi-lesson is most likely My Own Private Idahothe 1991 big-screen adaptation of Shakespeare's Henry IV, which starred Reeves and River Phoenix as the leads and Flea in a supporting role.

With his time as John Wick likely behind him, Reeves is currently in the midst of Dogstar's lengthy North American tour, which will take him through his hometown Toronto this December.
