"Wish I tried to pull you closer / You pushed me hard, made me focus / Your words, brutal, loving, truthful / I was petrified"

At the end of last month, Charli XCX announced Brat, her club-ready, bad attitude-having new record. She dropped the (much, much teased) single "Von Dutch" alongside the announcement, but we don't know a whole lot about the album besides the fact that it's supposedly arriving this summer.

However, Charli took her performance at last night's Billboard Women in Music Awards as a chance to debut a new track that'll presumably be on Brat — "So I," a tribute to Charli's visionary friend and collaborator SOPHIE.

The song references SOPHIE's 2017 track "It's Okay to Cry" — the lead single from her debut album Oil of Every Pearl's Un-insides — and it features some very raw lyrics: "Wish I tried to pull you closer / You pushed me hard, made me focus / Your words, brutal, loving, truthful / I was petrified."

SOPHIE died in 2021 after falling from a rooftop in Athens while trying to capture an image of the moon. St. Vincent recently shared in an interview with the Guardian that her new record, All Born Screaming, will also feature a song in tribute to SOPHIE.

Last night's Billboard event will stream online tonight, but you can watch fan footage of Charli's performance below.
