Bachman–Turner Overdrive co-founding guitarist Tim Bachman has died. He was 71.
The news was shared on Facebook by Bachman's son, Ryder, on Friday (April 28) evening. "My dad passed this afternoon," he wrote. "Thank you everyone for the kind words. Grateful I got to spend some time with him at the end. Grab yer loved ones and hug em close, ya never know how long you have."
Ryder shared in an additional post that he was contacted by the care home unit Bachman had been staying in late Wednesday (April 26) afternoon, urging him to say his final goodbyes to his father. When complications arose, the musician was apparently rushed to the emergency unit, where they discovered cancer had spread throughout his brain.
According to his son, Bachman's final words to him on Thursday (April 27) were, "I love you, Paxton. Keep sharing the music." Ryder honoured the guitarist's death over the weekend at Vancouver Island's Fanny Bay Inn & Pub by jamming his father's songs, including hits "Takin' Care of Business" and "Let It Ride."
The band got their start after Tim's brother Randy Bachman left the Guess Who in 1970. He initially formed and released two albums with a group called Brave Belt, which included his younger brothers Tim and Robbie (who passed away in January), as well as Fred Turner, by the end of its tenure.
Bachman–Turner Overdrive were officially founded in Winnipeg in 1973, with Tim playing on two of BTO's defining albums: Bachman–Turner Overdrive and Bachman–Turner Overdrive II. Tim left the band in 1974 and was replaced by Blair Thornton, but rejoined for some tours over the years.
Turner, Randy and Robbie were inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 2014, but Tim was not included. In 2010, he was charged with sexually assaulting a minor.
