In addition to Against Me! frontwoman Laura Jane Grace releasing her Tranny: Confessions of Punk Rock's Most Infamous Anarchist Sellout memoirs this fall, her long-running punk band will be delivering a new LP in 2016 as well. The group's Shape Shift with Me arrives September 16 through their own Total Treble imprint.
Against Me!'s seventh full-length release was apparently written over the past couple of years while on tour, with the entire thing recorded, mixed and engineered by Marc Jacob Hudson. It marks the first fully collaborative effort from the current lineup of guitarist/vocalist Grace, guitarist James Bowman, drummer Atom Willard (Rocket from the Crypt) and bassist Inge Johansson (the International Noise Conspiracy). It follows 2014's powerful Transgender Dysphoria Blues and last year's 23 Live Sex Acts concert release.
In a statement, Grace had this to say of the album:
Is there a record that is about relationships from a trans perspective? There needs to be more records about trans rights and everything like that, but feeling like I already did that, I wanted to move on to write commentary on living from a trans perspective. I wanted to write the transgender response to the Rolling Stones' Exile on Main St., Liz Phair's Exile in Guyville and the Streets' A Grand Don't Come for Free. All those records are relationship records. There's been an infinite amount of records talking about what love means from a cisgender perspective. I wanted to present the trans perspective on sex, love and heartbreak.
Against Me! are teasing the release with a stream of new amped-up singalong "333." You'll find a stream of the track, along with Shape Shift with Me's full tracklisting down below.
The band are also currently taking pre-orders for the CD and LP editions of Shape Shift with Me on their website. You can get the record on its own or packaged together with a band-branded T-shirt and turntable slipmat over here.
Along with the new album announcement, Against Me! have lined up a North American tour. It mainly sticks to the U.S. but the band play Montreal on September 21. You can see all the dates, many of which are with Bad Religion and Dave Hause, below.
As for Grace's memoirs, her Tranny is due November 15 via Hachette Books. The book is "mixes narrative about Laura's life — growing up with dysphoria and playing in our generation's most influential punk band — with amazing journal entries she's been keeping since she was a kid."
