A couple of years back, soul singer Sharon Jones was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, but she beat the disease and returned with an album (2014's Give the People What They Want) and a documentary (the newly premiered Miss Sharon Jones!). Sadly, the vocalist has now announced that her cancer has returned and she is beginning chemotherapy treatment.
Miss Sharon Jones! made its premiere on Friday night (September 11) at the Toronto International Film Festival. The documentary chronicles her battle with cancer and return to the music, but while the tone of the film is triumphant, Jones' appeared at the premiere and made her sad announcement in person.
"I start chemo on Wednesday," Thompson on Hollywood quoted her as saying. "But I'm gonna keep fighting. We got a long way to go." Her oncologist was also on hand, and it seems that Jones' prognosis is hopeful.
On Saturday night, Jones performed at Supercrawl in Hamilton, ON. During the performance, she told the crowd about her cancer battle. As a couple of attendees have pointed out on Twitter, she spoke during the gig about having recently started chemo (which is slightly different from Thompson on Hollywood's quote, which suggested she hadn't yet begun the treatment). In any case, it's clear that Jones will continue to battle the disease.
Stay tuned for Exclaim!'s review of Jones' emotional Supercrawl set.
UPDATE (9/13, 1:26 p.m.): Exclaim!'s review of the Supercrawl performance, including some of her comments on cancer, can be read here.
Jones and the Dap-Kings have a Christmas album called It's a Holiday Soul Party due out on October 30 through Daptone.
