Mavis Staples recently announced plans to embrace a more contemporary sound by working with producer Son Little, and now the fruits of their collaboration can be heard in full. Your Good Fortune drops on April 21 through Anti-, and it can be streamed now.
The four-song EP begins in classic-sounding fashion, with the soul harmonies of the title track. But it's not long before a thwacking drum machine enters and showcases Staples' undated sound. From there, "Fight" features minimal, jittery drum programming and Staples' soulful vocals.
The aforementioned two songs are originals by Little. The EP is rounded out with covers of Blind Lemon Jefferson's "See That My Grave Is Kept Clean" and Pops Staples' "Wish I Had Answered."
