Mavis Staples Announces 'Your Good Fortune' EP, Shares Title Track

Soul legend Mavis Staples recently helped to finish off a posthumous album by her dad Pops Staples, but now she's pressing ahead with some new music of her own. She has an EP called Your Good Fortune due out on April 21 through Anti-.

While Staples has recorded her last couple of albums with Wilco's Jeff Tweedy, this EP was produced by Anti- labelmate Son Little. It features two original compositions by Little, plus two old tunes previously recorded by the Staple Singers: Blind Lemon Jefferson's "See That My Grave Is Kept Clean" and Pops Staples' "Wish I Had Answered."

Little apparently helped to push Staples' sound in a contemporary direction, since a press release promises that is features "an array of modernist sounds created with the cut and paste methodology of contemporary hip-hop."

Staples said in a statement, "I'm always excited to do new songs. And this young man wrote two just for me. Seemed like we were a team made in heaven. He writes from his heart; he's a great singer who sings from his heart, and he reached my heart. I'm so glad we got to work together. The whole experience right down to the finished product was just extraordinary."

Meanwhile, a documentary about the vocalist called Mavis! recently premiered at South by Southwest. There's no word as to when it will receive a wide release.
