Wye Oak have collected brand new songs and previously shared singles for a new release. The duo of Jenn Wasner and Andy Stack will share Every Day Like the Last on June 23 via Merge.
The nine-track Every Day Like the Last brings together the singles Wye Oak has released since 2019's "Fortune" with a trio of new tracks. plus three new songs. That time period has also seen Wasner and Stack release 2020 EP No Horizon, and 2021 compilation Cut All the Wires: 2009-2011.
A 2020 tour that was cut short due to the pandemic led the duo to rethink how Wye Oak operated. This included shifting their musical mindset from creating album-length groups of songs to dealing in singles.
"Something that felt exciting to me was being a little bit more fleet-footed and light about being able to put things out into the world," Wasner shares in a release. "A lot of these songs, we would write them and record them and then they'd come out a couple of weeks later, which, to me, just sort of feels so much more in line with how the creative process works and feels on our end of things."
Alongside today's announcement, Wye Oak have shared the release's title track, which you can hear alongside a lyric video courtesy of Spence Kelly. It's one of three new inclusions you'll find the tracklist below.
"This song is about the sacrifices we make for love, companionship, and community," the band explain in a statement. "Human beings are messy, and yet — we need each other. The quality of our relationships determines the quality of our lives. But for all of us, and especially for those of us whose formative relationships were not so simple — alone can feel like the safest place to be. This song is about learning how to relax into imperfection, release the impulse to control, and accept the reality that life is brief and always ending, so we might as well have some company."
