Last Friday (April 5), 16 people were killed when a semi-trailer truck collided with the team bus of the Humboldt Broncos, a junior hockey team from Saskatchewan. Artists have come forward in the days since the crash with tributes both musical and monetary, and Inuit songwriter Willie Thrasher has now shared one of his own.
Thrasher has shared a tribute song titled "Little Town in Saskatchewan," which you can watch him perform in the player below.
Thrasher, who was a high-scoring player himself while skating for the Grollier Hall residential school team in Inuvik, NWT, performs the song with a 12-string guitar and harmonica, donning a Vancouver Canucks jersey in a show of solidarity.
Thrasher has most recently been touring as part of the Native North America Gathering, a musical celebration of Light in the Attic's Native North America (Vol. 1): Aboriginal Folk, Rock, and Country 1966-1985 compilation curated by Kevin Howes. The label also reissued Thrasher's 1981 full-length Spirit Child in 2015.
