Last week, Sturgill Simpson announced the cancellation of five performances in New York City and Nashville, and today, the singer-songwriter has revealed that he has been temporarily sidelined by a vocal cord injury.

"Welp, Turns out I did in fact unfortunately hemorrhage /rupture my vocal chords after all," Simpson shared on Instagram. "I am currently getting the best treatment available and should fully recover but it's gonna be a long hot minute before I can return to stage."

Simpson was set to play the shows in NYC and Nashville after a September that saw him play Farm Aid, MerleFest, and eight dates as part of Willie Nelson's travelling Outlaw Music Festival. Nelson also features on Simpson's latest album, The Ballad of Dood & Juanita, which arrived in August.

"I just wanted to turn this thing back on for about 15 seconds to say I'm sorry to everyone that had tickets to the remaining shows and to thank everyone that has supported me over the years..its been an incredibly fun, rewarding, and educational journey," Simpson continued.

"I played all the venues I dreamed about playing as a kid, met all my heroes, even became friends with most of them, and got to work and play with some of the finest musicians on the planet over the years. But on the bright side, now I can finally really focus on other pursuits and areas of passionate interest..like becoming the best hitman I can be."

We'd like to wish Simpson a speedy recovery. The Ballad of Dood & Juanita marked his third full-length release over a 12-month period, following Cuttin' Grass Vol. 1 and Cuttin' Grass Vol. 2.
