Sparks Team Up with Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard on "So We May Start"

The song is from Leos Carax's movie 'Annette,' which was penned by the Mael brothers

It's looking like 2021 will be the year that cult art-pop duo Sparks get some recognition at the movies. Edgar Wright already paid tribute to the pair with his excellent documentary The Sparks Brothers, but the films don't stop there. Annette, the band's long-awaited narrative collaboration with Holy Motors director Leos Carax is finally getting a release, and they've just shared some music from the film.

"So May We Start" is the first single from the film's soundtrack, which will arrive via Milan Records later this year. In addition to the Mael brothers, the tune features vocals from the film's stars Adam Driver, Marion Cotillard and Simon Helberg.

Regarding the film, the Mael brothers shared the following statement:

Initially, we conceived Annette as another Sparks album. Yet this time it would be a narrative story that would consist of three main characters, a small enough ensemble that would allow us to also present the 'opera' live on tour... The music, story and album were finished and ready to go, which is where the story takes a huge detour. After meeting Leos at Cannes, we felt a real kinship, so we thought we would send him Annette, not expecting anything other than to show him what Sparks was currently up to. And lo and behold, he said he really liked the album and would like to consider it as his next project.  We were happily surprised and elated at his reaction. As fans of Leos' films, to now realize that he would be directing a film of ours was beyond our dreams.

Listen to "So We May Start" below, where you'll also find the recently shared trailer for Annette. The film will open the 74th Cannes Film Festival, then be released theatrically on August 6 before hitting Amazon Prime on August 20.
