serpentwithfeet Announces New Album 'GRIP,' Shares Single with Ty Dolla $ign

Hear "Damn Gloves" ahead of the record

serpentwithfeet — the shapeshifting R&B project of Los Angeles-based musician Josiah Wise — has announced his third studio album, led by insistent new single "Damn Gloves" featuring Ty Dolla $ign and Yanga YaYa.

GRIP takes hold February 16 via Secretly Canadian. It's the follow-up to 2021's DEACON, as well as that year's DEACON'S GROVE EP.

In addition to appearances from Ty Dolla $ign, with whom Wise previously collaborated on the 2019 single "Receipts," and South African soul artist Yanga YaYa, contributions from Mick Jenkins and Orion Sun indicate that the new record may see serpentwithfeet delve deeper into the sounds of the club than ever before.

"I wanted to do something completely different than what I've done previously," the artist explained in a statement. "Going out while working on the album and seeing how people stood at the bar when ordering a drink, are they on their phone trying to disappear from the scene? Are they flirting with the bartender? Are they writhing slowly to the music? What does it look like when a guy runs into his ex and that ex is with someone new? I'm curious about all of this."

If the sensual tremor of "Damn Gloves" is any indication, dance music is going to fit serpentwithfeet like a glove (or shoe?). GRIP was likewise inspired by the artist's theatrical dance production, Heart of Brick, which follows a chance romance between two patrons of a Black gay nightclub. After premiering in Germany this summer, the production is currently touring across the US.
