Rolling Stones Working with Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr on New Album: Report

In-demand producer Andrew Watt is also tied to the project

The latest rumblings about a new Rolling Stones album, expected to arrive this summer, point to the two surviving members of the Beatles getting together in studio with their friendly rock n' roll rivals.

Variety cites "multiple sources" in reporting that Paul McCartney has recorded bass parts for "a forthcoming Rolling Stones project," to which his Fab Four rhythm section partner Ringo Starr will contribute drums.

The outlet adds that the project also involves in-demand producer Andrew Watt, whose resume includes work with rockers like Ozzy Osbourne, Pearl Jam and Iggy Pop, and modern stars such as Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus.

Variety's report points to recording sessions held in Los Angeles "in recent weeks," noting that while the effort is nearing the mixing stage, "it's unclear which tracks will make the final cut — or whether McCartney and Starr would end up on the same song."

If you've happened to avoid the latest Beatles-related beef and still have trouble answering Metric's Great Canadian Question of "Who would you rather be?" between the two bands, you may think it's a wonder McCartney even got invited to these sessions after deeming the Stones "a blues cover band" in a 2021 interview with The New Yorker.

Sure, he didn't look to cut quite as deep as Roger Daltrey did, but Macca's remark did get Mick Jagger to poke fun in return onstage in Los Angeles, where he joked, "Paul McCartney is here, he's going to help us — he's going to join us in a blues cover later," during an October 2021 performance.

The Rolling Stones celebrated 60 years as a group last year, and a new album would mark their first of original material since 2005's A Bigger Bang. Their most recent release remains 2016's covers collection Blue and Lonesome.

A new album would also mark the Stones' first without longtime drummer Charlie Watts, who passed away in August 2021 at age 80. Previously, guitarist Keith Richards confirmed that Watts had recorded drum parts for new material prior to his death, telling The Los Angeles Times, "Let me put it this way. You haven't heard the last of Charlie Watts."

It was recently reported that McCartney would appear on Dolly Parton's forthcoming rock album.
