Rolling Stones Drummer Charlie Watts's Jazz Recordings Collected for New Album 'Anthology'

When not keeping time as drummer of the Rolling Stones, Charlie Watts pursued jazz music as a bandleader and sideman onstage and in the studio. Now, a selection of the late drummer's recordings in the genre have been collected for a new album.

Anthology, arriving June 30 via BMG, is a retrospective spanning 20 years and various bands, including the Charlie Watts Quintet, Charlie Watts Tentet and the Charlie Watts Jim Keltner Project.

Joining Watts on these recordings are double bassist Dave Green and saxophonists Peter King, Evan Parker, and Courtney Pine. Below, you can hear a live recording of "Ain't Nobody Minding Your Store" captured at the UK's Swindon Arts Centre in 1978.

Anthology's 4-LP and 2-CD editions also feature an extended essay from music journalist Paul Sexton, mapping Watts's jazz career and the albums the retrospective draws from. The album is now available for pre-order.

Watts passed away in August 2021 at age 80. Last fall, it was reported that the Rolling Stones would release a new album in summer 2023, which would mark their first without Watts behind the kit.
