Pixies Guitarist Joey Santiago Enters Rehab

BY Sarah MurphyPublished Sep 16, 2016

Long-running alt-rock act Pixies announced this morning (September 16) that guitar player Joey Santiago has entered rehab for alcohol and drug treatment.

In an official statement, Black Francis, David Lovering and Paz Lenchantin offered their support to Santiago, saying, "This is the best thing that Joey could have done, and we're very proud that he's taken this step."

Santiago is expected to remain at a rehabilitation centre for at least 30 days. While the band maintain that they still fully intend to adhere their UK and Europe tour schedule in November and December, they did acknowledge that some of the "planned promotional activities" surrounding the release of their Head Carrier LP may be affected. The record is still slated to hit retailers on September 30 via Pixiesmusic/Play It Again Sam.

Frontman Francis recently opened up about the band members' interpersonal relationships, revealing that he's not on bad terms with founding member and former bassist Kim Deal. He went on to say that even the current members aren't necessarily in touch all the time outside of band obligations, though he did note: "The only person I occasionally talk to is Joey, and even that is just an out-of-the-blue conversation and it's usually strange and not anything to do with anything."
