Pixies Announce 'Head Carrier' LP, Share New Single

Earlier this year, Pixies released a video trailer that teased some forthcoming new material. Well, details about the band's next project have now been revealed, and it turns out they'll be delivering a new album this fall.

Titled Head Carrier, the new LP will arrive on September 30 through Pixiesmusic/Play It Again Sam. In addition to standard CD, vinyl and digital formats, the record is also available as part of a number of special bundles, including a limited-edition box set that comes with the CD, heavy-weight 180-gram vinyl, and a 24-page booklet of lyrics and artwork.

The 12-song offering was recorded with producer Tom Dalgety in February and March of this year at Rak Studios in London. It also hears frontman Black Francis, guitarist Joey Santiago and drummer David Lovering welcoming bassist Paz Lenchantin (who has been touring with the group since 2014) into the band's permanent lineup.

"I was very nervous in the beginning when I went to that first rehearsal," she said in a press release. "There were these shoes I felt I had to fill and I tried to do the best I could for the fans, to make the live performances sound true to the originals. I spent three years learning to understand what being a Pixie meant, and now, my heart, spirit, and love for their music is embedded in me and I feel like I have become a Pixie. We had been more about the history of the Pixies, but now, we are about going forward."

Switching things up from their old style of touring heavily and churning out an album per year, Pixies slowed the process down on Head Carrier, spending six weeks in pre-production just writing, arranging and rehearsing the new songs.

"This was a wonderful luxury, for us to have the time to be able to really work these new songs out," Lovering said. "By the time we started recording, we all knew the songs backwards and forwards, so it took half as long for us to make this album as it did to make Indie Cindy."

The first glimpse of the new record arrives with the lead single "Um Chagga Lagga," and you can scroll past the Head Carrier tracklisting to give it a listen right now. The band have yet to announce any North American stops, but you can see their upcoming world tour dates here.
