Nap Eyes

'Whine of the Mystic' (album stream)

BY Alex HudsonPublished Jul 6, 2015

Nap Eyes' album Whine of the Mystic originally came out last year but only in a short run. Now, the LP is being rescued from obscurity thanks to a reissue from You've Changed Records/Paradise of Bachelors. With a few days to go until its July 10 release, the album can be streamed now.

Whine of the Mystic was recorded live to tape with no overdubs. Frontman Nigel Chapman explained in a statement, "You get the feeling of the song; everyone's feeling, all as one take in time, so things fit together naturally, and even mistakes sound natural. This not to discredit any of the incredible recordings made by different principles; it's just its own kettle of fish."

This all results in a charming rock record with hints of garage pop and folk. Tunes like "No Man Needs to Care," "Tribal Thoughts" and "The Night of the First Show" are perky and concisely punchy, while Nap Eyes show off their range on seven-minute epics "Delirium and Persecution Paranoia" and "No Feel of Hellfire."
