Montreal's Hélène Barbier Premieres New Album 'Have You Met Elliott?'

BY Sarah MurphyPublished Jul 8, 2019

France-born, Montreal-based artist Hélène Barbier previously released music with Moss Lime and Phern, but now she's set to release her debut solo album Have You Met Elliott?

The record was "composed in broad strokes" at home before Barbier took the songs into the studio, where she purged herself emotionally and turned a difficult period in her life into artistic expression.

"I got a soundcard from my friends and started recording songs at home alone, thinking about the childish behaviours we sometimes hold onto as adults," Barbier tells Exclaim! "The songs started turning into an album, and I got the opportunity to record with Peter Woodford again. Have you met Elliott? is a reminder that, as my friend's sister once told them when they were a child, 'You can't just cry to have candies.'"

It was captured to tape at the Bottle Garden and mixed at Value Sound. It features Barbier on bass, guitar, organ and vocals, while Christian Simmons is on drums, Emma Coldwell and Matt Robidoux's contribute extra guitar work, and Elise Paradis plays violin.

The final product will be released on July 12 via Michel Records, but you can get an early listen to Have You Met Elliott? below.
