Mike Krol Unveils 'Power Chords' LP

BY Sarah MurphyPublished Oct 23, 2018

Mike Krol has announced plans for the follow-up to his 2015 LP Turkey. It's titled Power Chords, and it's set for release on January 25 via Merge.

As the album name implies, Power Chords hears Krol embracing his punk rock roots — though as a press release puts it, it's like "the chords are playing him rather than the other way around."

The sound was influenced by the likes of Misfits, the Strokes, Weezer and the Ramones, but also doesn't shy away from experimenting with unusual guitar lines and melodies.

The record even has the co-sign of Swearin' singer/songwriter and Krol's partner, Allison Crutchfield, who gave some further insight into the album via a new Instagram post.

She explained that Krol started recording the album in Nashville, and put finishing touches on it in Los Angeles.

"I saw him agonize over every detail and refuse to compromise, make side steps and tumbles and ultimately, overcome it all to make an album that no one else could have possibly made," she wrote.

Since the day I met Mike (March 22, 2017), he has in one way or another been working on 'Power Chords'. In the beginning he was finishing writing songs and sending me demos and lyrics, asking for my opinions and ideas. Then later he flew to Nashville to begin recording and then spent the better part of a year making finishing touches with various friends at home in LA. Then once it was finished and mastered, I saw him work on the cover art and packaging and realized the hard part had only just begun; it has been a constant topic of discussion and variable to navigate for us throughout our entire relationship thus far. I saw him agonize over every detail and refuse to compromise, make side steps and tumbles and ultimately, overcome it all to make an album that no one else could have possibly made. I'll never stop feeling inspired by the level of attention he's willing to pay, or the extreme patience that kind of commitment requires. I have learned so much from him about having standards and taking your time while watching him create this record, and I've can honestly say I've never been prouder of anyone than I am now that this thing is making its way into the world. This record feels so complete and whole and as someone who makes records, that feeling is extraordinarily rare. you're gonna love it. // "Power Chords" is our January 25, 2019 on Merge Records <3
